How Can Pilates Improve Scoliosis?

But first, what is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional lateral curvature of the spine, which frequently shows up as either an ‘S’ or a ‘C’ shape on x-ray. It is often managed by observation, bracing or spinal surgery. Both the origin and degree of spinal curvature, as well as the demands each person has placed upon his or her spine (through injuries, stress, aging) have an effect on the unique and complex way that scoliosis shows up in each person.

Research To The Rescue!

Research has shown that a scoliosis specific exercise program may:

  • Improve the spine’s curvatures by up to 1/3!

  • Improve pain and quality of life.

  • Increase lung capacity & chest expansion.

  • Decrease the progression of the spine’s curvatures to avoid symptoms getting worse over time.

  • Help reduce the need for bracing in small to medium sized curves.

  • Significantly decrease the likelihood of spinal fusion surgery.

Pilates for Scoliosis

Schroth-informed scoliosis management often incorporates small wedges and props that help to stabilize and lengthen the spine as it moves into a more neutral position. A series of Pilates-based exercises combined with specific breathing techniques are then used to strengthen the muscles necessary to return and hold the body in its new alignment. Consistent repetition of these exercises is necessary to discourage the body from returning to the position it knows best, and clients are taught a number of exercises to take home with them to practice.

While options range from the development of a personal home program to private and small group training, a series of 3-5 one-on-one sessions initially is recommended. This enables people to learn about their own curvatures, as well as how to use the equipment in ways that fit their own particular spines. An integrated approach that collaborates with other healthcare professionals is most effective to manage scoliosis.

I started taking Pilates with Lisa to help with my scoliosis. After a few months of Pilates I noticed a big difference in my core strength and my back. My back looked more toned, felt stronger and my posture also improved. Lisa is truly a pleasure to work with. She is very kind, friendly, supportive and truly committed to helping you achieve your goals :) She is an amazing instructor and really tailors the sessions to your individual needs. I would highly recommend Lisa to anyone!

*The Schroth Method is a nonsurgical option for treating scoliosis. It uses exercises and movements tailored for each patient to restore the curved spine to a more neutral position. The objective of Schroth exercises is to lengthen, elongate and secure the spine.
