Pain is Not Always a Sign of Damage

Think of pain like your body’s alarm system. It’s designed to protect you. But sometimes, especially when pain has been around for a while (more than 3 months), the system can become overly sensitive—like a smoke alarm going off at the first sign of toast burning. There’s no fire, but the alarm blares anyway.

This is called persistent pain, and it’s not about something being broken or damaged. It’s about your system being on high alert.

3 Core Concepts for Managing Persistent Pain

  1. Hurt ≠ Harm
    Pain doesn’t always mean you’re causing damage. Your nervous system might just be reacting more quickly and more loudly than it needs to. We can turn the volume down.

  2. Retrain, Don’t Retreat
    Rest isn’t always the best medicine. In fact, avoiding activity can make pain worse over time. Gradually returning to movement—at a level your body can handle—helps your system learn that it’s safe again.

  3. Listen and Learn
    Start with gentle activity. If your pain settles within 24 hours, you’re on the right track. If it lingers longer, scale it back slightly. This 24-hour symptom response is a helpful guide.

Pain is your brain and body’s assessment of your own health, and it can be influenced by many things.
