What is Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine?

Acupuncture has been practiced in Asia for over 2,000 years and remains an integral part of Eastern medicine. In the West, it is a natural complement to many other therapies, such as physiotherapy, chiropractic, and massage therapy.

Effective in treating a wide variety of conditions, including:

low back pain | headaches & migraines | allergies | low energy | depression | anxiety | menopause | poor sleep | colitis | weight management

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for a variety of illnesses.  It involves the placement of extremely fine, sterile needles into specific acupoints along the channels of the body.  It stimulates the release of the body’s own natural pain killers.  It also influences the release of molecules associated with tissue healing and disease resolution.

A body of research indicates that acupuncture is effective for many condition.  When an acupuncture needle is inserted it affects the nervous system, makes changes at a biochemical level as well as influences the fascia and extracellular matrix.

Acupuncture practitioners aim not only to provide symptom relief but to evaluate the health of an individual and address the root cause of illness in order to restore harmony, balance and overall health.

We offer direct billing for this service.

I’ve seen Lucy for acupuncture treatments for chronic knee pain as well as other issues over the past six years. Acupuncture offers a very different approach to healing than Western treatments, which I have found to be extremely helpful.

During an initial acupuncture session, a detailed discussion will occur, typically lasting 15-30 minutes during which time the main complaint will be investigated as well as overall health condition and health history. Pulses may be taken and the tongue observed in order to further assess and diagnose the root cause of illness. After the discussion, the client will be offered an acupuncture treatment lasting 30-60 minutes to address the conditions that were outlined.

What Is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine is a respected ancient and modern form of medicine. It is backed up by the time tested Chinese medical system of diagnosis and treatment. This form of medicine goes back thousands of years and has studied the flavors, properties and functions of hundreds of herbs and how they work together. This is a subject of extensive research (especially in China) that aims to understand the pharmacology of different herbs and formulas, and their effect on human physiology and health.

throughout the last few thousand years, Chinese herbalists have diligently refined and mastered the art of making herbal formulas

These Formulas have effectively treated a large population for many different types of diseases that have been prevalent among different climates, populations, and eras.

An herbal formula is a specific composition of herbs made for an individual, with the purpose of treating both the current symptoms (the branch), and the underlying cause of disease (the root). The herbs work in synergy to increase treatment effectiveness, make the formula easy to absorb, and deliver the medicine to the desired organ or tissue.

Chinese herbal medicine can work in combination with acupuncture and other treatment modalities and should be considered for any chronic, stubborn and complex internal illness that has not yet been successfully treated.
