A Structured Approach to Difficult Memories
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that may help people process difficult or distressing memories. It's recognized as an approved treatment by EMDRIA (EMDR International Association) and EMDR Canada, the leading professional bodies for EMDR training and standards.
EMDR is often considered when an experience still feels emotionally intense, even years later. For example, you might notice tears, a racing heart, or a strong reaction when something reminds you of a past event, even if you know logically that it's over. EMDR is designed to work on reducing the emotional charge attached to these memories, so the experience can be remembered without the same intensity.
EMDR is available through two paths at Tall Tree: registered clinical counsellors and a registered psychologist. Both approach EMDR within their scope of practice, and your clinician will help you understand what to expect before starting.
How EMDR Can Help:
-
Support for processing distressing or traumatic experiences that continue to affect daily life, sleep, or relationships.
-
Support for persistent anxiety, panic, or stress reactions connected to specific memories or events.
-
Support for processing loss or major life changes that feel unresolved or overwhelming.
-
Support for specific fears or blocks that may be connected to a past experience.

How To Get Started
You can book your initial appointment online for either path. This first appointment is where you and your clinician talk through your history and goals and decide together whether EMDR is a good fit. EMDR-specific work begins in a later session, once that groundwork is in place.
Counselling
Cost: $185
Registered Clinical Counsellors are trained to support mental health and emotional concerns through therapy, and do not provide psychological assessments or diagnoses
EMDR is delivered as part of counselling, following the same EMDR framework, without a diagnostic assessment attached
A good fit if you're looking for support with your history and goals without needing a formal diagnosis
-
Many extended health plans cover counselling, but coverage depends on your specific plan. We can direct bill depending on your provider and the requirements for direct billing. We recommend checking with your provider before booking about your plan coverage and direct billing availability. If you have any questions about insurance coverage or direct billing, please feel free to contact us.
Psychology
Cost: $285
Registered Psychologists have additional training in assessment and diagnosis alongside providing therapy, and can diagnose mental health conditions
EMDR is delivered as part of psychological care, and can be paired with assessment or diagnosis when that's relevant to your goals
A good fit if you need a diagnosis, for example for insurance claims, workplace accommodations, or referrals

What to Expect

EMDR begins with a comprehensive assessment, during which time clinicians gauge an understanding of the difficulties you have experienced, the extent to which these experiences have negatively impacted you, and the challenges you have experienced as a result. During this time, it is not expected that you immediately explore the trauma(s) you have experienced in great detail; this entirely depends on your level of comfort.
After this time, clinicians will provide you with EMDR Resourcing skills, which will support you to emotionally regulate and self-soothe during challenging sessions, and in-between sessions in your own time.
Due to the treatment planning involved, it is important for you to know that EMDR will not occur in the first session.
-
Once you are familiar with EMDR resourcing skills, clinicians will commence a formal EMDR protocol, based on an experience that has been mutually identified as an appropriate target for EMDR work, before focusing specifically on the experience(s) of trauma that have led you to seek EMDR.
FAQs
-
Many extended health plans cover counselling or psychology, but coverage depends on your specific plan. Since EMDR is submitted under counselling or psychology rather than as its own billing category, your coverage will depend on which path you choose. We recommend checking with your provider before booking. If you have questions, feel free to contact us and we'll be happy to help.

No, you don't need a referral to book EMDR. Your first appointment focuses on understanding your history and goals, and whether EMDR is the right fit for you. EMDR-specific work then begins in a later appointment.
-
EMDR is currently offered at our Victoria-area locations in Cordova Bay and James Bay, and at our Vancouver location on Commercial Drive.
-
Yes, EMDR can be offered virtually, depending on the clinician. If virtual EMDR is something you're interested in, just let us know when booking. Research so far suggests it can be similarly effective to in-person sessions for many people, but your clinician can help you decide which format is the better fit for your situation and comfort level.
-
Both offer EMDR, and the right fit depends on what you need. A counsellor may be a good starting point if you want talk-based support without needing a formal diagnosis. A psychologist may be a better fit if you need a diagnosis, for example for a workplace accommodation, disability claim, or referral to another provider. Coverage under extended health plans varies by provider, so please check your plan’s coverage prior to booking. If you're unsure who to book, please contact us and we can help you decide.
-
This depends on your goals, history, and how you respond to treatment. Some people notice shifts after a handful of sessions, while others benefit from longer-term care, especially with more complex or long-standing experiences. There's no fixed number that applies to everyone. Your clinician will check in with you regularly and adjust your plan as care progresses, so you always have a sense of how things are going.
-
Your clinician will talk with you about your history, current concerns, and goals for therapy. This helps them understand whether EMDR is a good fit and how to pace your care. EMDR-specific work doesn't begin in this first session. Once your clinician has a clear picture of your history and goals, you'll move into EMDR together in a later appointment. You'll also have a chance to ask questions and get a sense of what working together will be like.
EMDR follows a structured, eight-phase approach. Early sessions focus on understanding your history, identifying your goals, building resources, and making sure you feel prepared for reprocessing. When you're ready, your clinician will guide you through the reprocessing process using bilateral stimulation, which may involve eye movements, tapping, or sounds, depending on your preference.
EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of a difficult experience. Your clinician will gather enough information to understand your concerns and develop an appropriate treatment plan. During reprocessing, you may work with an image, thought, feeling, or body sensation connected to an experience without needing to tell the entire story in detail. Your clinician will help you decide what information is important to share, and will work at a pace that feels manageable.
