What to Expect
Couples counselling isn’t about deciding who’s right or wrong. Your counsellor will work with both of you to better understand the patterns affecting your relationship and identify what you’d like to change.
To get started, submit our form or contact us with any questions you might have.
-
Your first session is a chance for your counsellor to get to know both of you, understand what brought you to counselling, and learn what you each hope to get out of the process.
Together, you’ll begin identifying your goals and the patterns, concerns, or experiences you’d like to work on.
-
From there, sessions focus on the goals you’ve identified together. Depending on your relationship and your counsellor’s approach, you might work on communication, conflict, emotional connection, trust, boundaries, or practical strategies for navigating challenges differently.
The number and frequency of sessions will depend on your goals and your counsellor’s recommendations.

It depends. If you already see one of our couples counsellors individually, they may not be able to also work with you and your partner as a couple.
Please contact us before booking. We can confirm your options and help you find the right fit for couples counselling.
-
No. Couples counselling isn’t only for relationships in crisis. Some couples come because they’re struggling with a specific issue, while others want to communicate better, feel more connected, or strengthen their relationship before problems become harder to manage.
-
Your counsellor creates a structured space where both partners can talk openly about what they’re experiencing. You’ll work together to identify patterns in your relationship, understand each other’s perspectives, and develop new ways of communicating and responding to challenges.
-
Recurring conflict is a common reason couples seek counselling. Rather than focusing only on the subject of the argument, counselling can help you understand the patterns underneath it and find different ways of communicating when difficult topics come up.
-
That’s okay. You don’t both need to arrive feeling equally confident about counselling. Your first appointment can be an opportunity to ask questions, talk about what each of you wants from the process, and see whether the counsellor feels like a good fit.
-
Couples counselling can provide a structured space to talk about breaches of trust and explore what each person needs moving forward. What that process looks like will depend on your circumstances, goals, and counsellor.
-
The approach will depend on the counsellor you choose and their individual training. Tall Tree counsellors use a range of therapeutic approaches, which may include attachment-based approaches, The Gottman Method, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and other evidence-informed approaches.
Not every approach is offered by every counsellor. We can help you find a counsellor whose training and approach align with what you’re looking for.
