What are Steroid Injections?

Steroid injections, also called corticosteroid injections, are commonly used to decrease inflammation and relieve pain in specific areas of the body. These injections deliver anti-inflammatory medication—synthetic forms of cortisol, a hormone naturally produced by the adrenal glands—directly to the site of inflammation. By targeting the affected area, corticosteroid injections can offer both diagnostic and therapeutic benefits, reducing swelling, pain and stiffness. This often allows people to return to their usual activities with less discomfort, especially when inflammation is a primary cause of pain.

Benefits of Steroid Injections

  • Rapid Pain Relief: Many patients experience significant symptom relief within a few days. By reducing inflammation, these injections can improve joint and tissue function, helping you regain mobility and function.

  • Targeted Treatment: Medication is delivered directly to the site of inflammation, maximizing effectiveness and minimizing systemic side effects.

What to Expect

Initial Visit: 45 minutes

Subsequent Visits: 30-60 minutes

  • During your consultation, Dr. Sydney will evaluate your condition, review your medical history and determine if a steroid injection is suitable for you.

  • The area where the injection will be given is cleaned and prepared for the injection.

  • To ensure precision, some injections are done with the assistance of ultrasound. This allows the doctor to see the exact position of the needle, improving accuracy and effectiveness.

  • A small needle is used to inject the steroid medication into the affected area. The injection itself typically takes only a few minutes.

  • After the injection, you may experience temporary numbness or mild soreness at the injection site. Your doctor will provide instructions on any activity limitations or aftercare.

FAQs

  • The duration of relief varies, but many patients experience several weeks to several months of reduced pain. Some patients may require additional injections over time.

  • Common side effects include mild soreness at the injection site, temporary numbness, and, rarely, a slight increase in pain for a day or two after the injection. Our doctors will discuss potential side effects in detail before the procedure.

  • Steroid injections can generally be given every few months, but frequency depends on individual circumstances and doctor recommendations. Overuse of steroids can have side effects, so it’s essential to follow a treatment plan created by your doctor.

  • Our naturopathic physician, Dr. Sydney Green, performs the steroid injection treatment.

Are steroid injections right for you?

Steroid injections can be highly effective for managing pain, but they may not be the best choice for everyone. During your consultation with Dr. Sydney, she will determine if a steroid injection is suitable based on your specific condition, medical history, and treatment goals. If steroid injections are not the best option, she may recommend alternative treatments.
