What to Expect

Consultation: 60 minutes

Subsequent Visits: 45 to 90 minutes

  • Your first appointment is a 60-minute consultation with a naturopathic doctor. They’ll review your medical history, labs, and make sure IV iron is safe and appropriate for you. If an infusion is recommended, a prescription is ordered and delivered to the clinic.

  • The infusion itself usually takes 45–90 minutes. You’ll be monitored closely at the start and throughout the treatment. Most people do not experience side effects, though some may notice temporary flushing, mild aches, or a rash. Severe allergic reactions are extremely rare.

  • After your infusion, it can take a few days to a week to feel improvements, with follow-up lab testing at 4–6 weeks.

Commonly Treated Conditions

  • Increases iron demand, often beyond what diet alone can supply

  • As a result of a low-iron diet or difficulty absorbing iron from food.

  • From heavy menstrual cycles, childbirth, or other causes of bleeding.

  • Disorders like Celiac disease, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, or post-gastric surgery that limit nutrient absorption.

FAQs

  • An iron infusion (IV iron) is a treatment where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) line. This allows your body to quickly restore iron and hemoglobin levels, which are essential for carrying oxygen throughout your body. Iron infusions can be considered when oral supplements aren’t well tolerated digestively or when they are taking too long to improve levels.

  • Symptoms of iron deficiency can include fatigue, brain fog, frequent headaches, shortness of breath, brittle or thinning hair, feeling cold, restless legs, or increased anxiety.

  • An iron infusion may be a good option if you have low iron, ongoing fatigue, or if oral iron supplements cause stomach upset or don’t work well for you. Most people notice benefits within weeks, and iron levels can remain stable for years after treatment.

To know if it’s right for you, lab testing is required to determine your iron status and safe dosing. Book a consultation with a naturopathic doctor to learn more.

  • Most people only need one infusion to restore healthy iron levels. In some cases, a series of infusions may be recommended depending on how low your levels are and the type of iron used.

  • For many people, an iron infusion can maintain optimal levels for 1–5 years. This can vary depending on your age, menstrual cycle, pregnancies, or ongoing medical conditions.

  • Yes. Side effects are uncommon and usually mild, such as temporary flushing or body aches. Severe allergic reactions are extremely rare (about 0.004%). You’ll be closely monitored during your treatment to ensure your safety.

  • Yes. Lab work (such as a CBC and ferritin test) is needed to confirm iron deficiency and determine safe dosing. Your naturopathic doctor will review or order the appropriate labs before scheduling your infusion.

  • Iron itself is usually covered by most extended health plans under drug coverage. The infusion procedure may also be covered if you have naturopathic benefits. Check with your insurance provider for details.

  • Oral iron often causes stomach upset, constipation, or may not absorb well. An infusion bypasses the digestive system and raises iron levels much faster — often within weeks instead of months or years.
