What are Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections?

PRP therapy is an advanced regenerative treatment for both chronic and acute musculoskeletal injuries. It uses a small sample of your own blood, processed to concentrate platelets—cells rich in growth factors essential for tissue repair. When injected into injured areas, PRP stimulates cell regeneration, collagen production, and healing. This accelerates recovery, reduces pain and inflammation, and helps restore function. PRP is a popular, non-surgical option for joint, tendon, or ligament injuries, especially those that haven’t responded to standard treatments.

Benefits of PRP Injections

  • Reduced pain and inflammation: PRP therapy can significantly decrease pain and inflammation in individuals with chronic musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis and tendon injuries. Studies indicate improvements in pain scores and patient function, often providing longer-lasting relief compared to some conventional therapies.

  • Harness your body’s natural healing abilities: PRP therapy uses platelets derived from your own blood to accelerate the body’s innate healing processes. By injecting concentrated platelets and growth factors directly into areas of injury, this approach supports and stimulates the natural tissue repair mechanisms already present in your body.

What to Expect

Initial Visit: 45 minutes

Subsequent Visits: 75-90 minutes

  • During your consultation, Dr. Sydney will evaluate your condition, review your medical history and determine if a PRP injection is suitable for you.

  • A small amount of your blood is collected and is placed in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma from other blood components.

  • The area where the injection will be given is cleaned and prepared for the injection.

  • To ensure precision, some injections are done with the assistance of ultrasound. This allows the doctor to see the exact position of the needle, improving accuracy and effectiveness.

  • A small needle is used to inject the concentrated PRP into the affected area. The injection itself typically takes only a few minutes.

  • After the injection, you may experience temporary soreness at the injection site. Your doctor will provide instructions on any activity limitations or aftercare.

FAQs

  • The number of PRP treatments varies from person to person. After your initial injection, your doctor will typically schedule a follow-up visit in about two weeks to assess your healing progress. While some individuals notice improvement after just one session, others may require additional treatments. Most patients benefit from 2 to 6 sets of injections, spaced 3 to 6 weeks apart.

  • PRP is a regenerative treatment, so results develop gradually over time. The timeframe for noticeable improvement can range from several weeks to a few months. Factors such as the number and concentration of treatments, your overall health, the specific condition being treated, and any underlying medical issues can all influence your response. On average, most patients observe improvement approximately two months after their first treatment.

  • The duration of PRP’s benefits varies for each individual and depends on factors like the underlying condition and whether there has been a repeat injury to the area. Because of these variables, it is difficult to predict exactly how long the effects will last or if additional treatments may be needed in the future. Some patients return for repeat PRP injections months or even years later.

  • As with any injection, there is a small risk of infection, injury to blood vessels, nerves, tendons, or ligaments, as well as minor bleeding or bruising. Many patients experience temporary pain or discomfort following the procedure. If you are currently ill, consult your doctor before proceeding with PRP therapy.

  • At Tall Tree, we use the Arthrex ACP MAX. The Arthrex ACP Max system gives you one of the strongest PRP treatments available. The ACP Max system produces PRP with a platelet concentration up to 12 times higher than baseline whole blood. Most other PRP systems offer lower platelet concentrations—sometimes less than half the dose. Additionally, it's special double-process removes most of the blood cells that can cause irritation, so you get the healing benefits with less risk of unwanted inflammation.

What Can PRP Injections Help With?

    • Chronic Joint Pain

    • Bursitis (hip, shoulder, elbow)

    • Plantar Fasciitis (chronic heel pain)

Are PRP injections right for you?

PRP injections can be highly effective options for managing pain, but they may not be the best choice for everyone. During your consultation with Dr. Sydney, she will determine if PRP injections are suitable based on your specific condition, medical history, and treatment goals. If PRP injections are not the best option, she may recommend alternative treatments.
